Things to do
Discover the region
A dip in the pool, a visit to the quaint village of Giomici and its little 14th century church, enjoy horseback riding, a walk on the Franciscan path or a countryside bike ride – just a few things that you can do at Giomici Castle. Or why not spend the day relaxing and contemplating the beauty of the surrounding countryside. You can of course also discover the nearby attractions, such as the Etruscan ruins of Perugia, the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi or the splendid medieval town of Gubbio. There will certainly be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a wonderful holiday in one of the most beautiful castles of Umbria.
Things to do at the castle
Located in the middle of the Umbrian countryside, the castle offers a base from which to discover the nearby towns and cities which are rich in centuries of history. Perugia and its Etruscan heritage, the medieval cities of Gubbio and Assisi, the latter being the birthplace of St. Francis and the destination of religious pilgrimages, are all less than 20 minutes away. The castle is also strategically located along the ‘Via di Francesco’ (Way of St. Francis) and therefore offers unique and beautiful walks in the countryside. Or you could discover the countryside by bike or even on horseback, thanks to the riding stable located just a stone’s throw from the castle.
A few hundred meters at the disposal of the guests of the apartments there is a large swimming pool immersed in the countryside, while for the guests of the castle there is the swimming pool of Casa Fumata about 3 km away (available by reservation only at a cost of 6 Euros per person per day).
Finally, your imagination will be the limit and at the castle you will enjoy that freedom and peace of mind so sought after, in order to relax from the stresses of everyday life.
Catering & food tastings
Umbria is a land with a great food and wine tradition and at Giomici Castle we have the utmost respect for this aspect of local life. We have therefore selected the best local suppliers for our dishes and a catering service that offers extraordinary quality in both form and substance. So, whether it is a food tasting, a dinner during your stay or a ceremony with hundreds of guests, we do everything possible and beyond to offer you the best, while also paying close attention to the cost – which never hurts. All in the extraordinary setting of Giomici, be it located in the beautiful interior halls or the courtyard in the shadow of the castle’s tower.
Guided visits
Giomici Castle and the village are so beautiful that on request we can organise guided tours of the outside areas. For guests staying with us it is a must in the morning to explore the quaint village and visit the Church of San Michele Arcangelo. We like to tell the thousand-year-old story of Giomici, its thousand anecdotes and true stories, from San Francesco d’Assisi to the bandit Cinicchia, and not forgetting our ghost Castaldo, all of which we like to share with friends and guests. We should also mention the climb up the tower, 74 steps in total but it is most definitely worth it, especially at sunrise and sunset, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of an almost immaculate panorama.
The journey of Francis and excursions
On foot, by bicycle and on horseback, Giomici is located on the path that connects some places that testify to the life and preaching of the Saint of Assisi. Giomici, with its fenced-in hectares of reserve area, is connected via some paths that start from the castle and arrive at the Church of Barcaccia, or Monte della Dea, or even closer, the Rio Grande gorges in Valfabbrica.
The surrounding area
Often guests come to Giomici not only because of its beautiful location but also because of its strategic position. Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia are less than half an hour away by car, while in less than an hour you can reach Todi, Spoleto, Foligno, the Frasassi Caves and Lake Trasimeno. During the summer months there are also guided visits to the nearby villages of Valfabbrica. and Casacastalda, as well as excursions to experience a working oil mill or farm, food and wine tastings, ceramic courses and much more. We are happy to provide you with an agenda of what is happening during your period of stay with us.
Shop & typical produce
In respect to the Umbrian food and wine tradition, we have selected some excellent quality local suppliers (and at affordable prices), in order to offer our guests a wide choice of local produce to take home with them at the end of their stay or as gifts for friends and family.
